Tottenham Hotspur may not be in action on Sunday, but their fans aren’t happy with what their club has just posted.
Away from the football, Max Verstappen created history by becoming the first-ever Dutch F1 champion by overtaking Lewis Hamilton in the final lap of a quite remarkable Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon.
In one of the most nail-biting finishes in F1 history, the 24-year-old, who was on pole going into the final race, amazingly came out on top in what was a controversial ending in the desert.
Tottenham’s official Twitter account posted their reaction to Verstappen’s quite dramatic win, as he was pictured holding the shirt of his fellow countryman, Steven Bergwijn.
The Spurs faithful aren’t too happy because they think Hamilton was robbed of the title following that ending.
Hamilton was in control of the race heading towards the end and he had a 10+ second lead on his rival – and it was climbing.
But then the safety car was deployed and the race was restarted with one lap to go to the annoyance of the Mercedes team.
There were two protests from the Mercedes side, and in one case, they have every right to be aggrieved because they feel that the powers that be didn’t follow the rules of on safety car procedure
Given all of that mess, Spurs fans didn’t like the fact that their club account was backing a Dutch driver and not Hamilton, who races under the Briitish flag.
One thing is for sure, what unfolded in Abu Dhabi will rumble on during the coming days and this is something that many will talk about in years and years to come.
As things stand, Verstappen is the F1 world champion, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if this is overturned on appeal – and what a story that would be.
