Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Marcelo Bielsa has been speaking about Kalvin Phillips and his ongoing injury issues.

Phillips picked up a hamstring problem at the weekend against Brentford, and he could be on the sidelines for quite a while.

During Bielsa’s press conference on Thursday, one journalist queried whether or not this period on the sidelines would provide Leeds with an opportunity to send Phillips to have surgery on his shoulder, as he’s had a long-standing issue with his shoulder.

Bielsa claims that this suggestion makes sense, but he says that he’s unable to make a call on that front until he knows just how long the Yorkshire Pirlo’s hamstring issue will keep him out.

What’s been said about Phillips?

Bielsa responded when asked if Phillips would have shoulder surgery while he’s out with his hamstring problem.

“I haven’t heard that information from the medical staff. It has common sense, what you just mentioned. If the time he needs to recover from this injury exceeds the recovery from his shoulder, that makes sense. As we don’t know how long he will take to recover from his current injury, I cannot apply my common sense to your enquiry,” Bielsa said.

Smart move

If Leeds are to send Phillips to have surgery on his shoulder while he’s out with a hamstring problem, they could kill two birds with one stone.

Sadly, Phillips does need to address this shoulder problem at some point. Yes, he’s been able to play through it so far, but, much like Marcus Rashford in the summer, he’ll have to get it fixed sooner or later.

If he’s out for a few weeks with a hamstring problem though, that would grant him the perfect excuse to get his shoulder looked at and fix both issues at the same time.

Phillips may have a new lease of life when he returns if he’s granted the chance to have this shoulder surgery.
