Who remembers the iconic moment when rapper Lil Mama crashed Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ stage?

The incident happened at the 2009 VMA’s, the same night that Kanye West stormed Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech.

Lil Mama ran onto the stage whilst they were singing their famous track Empire State of Mind.

But did you know that a very famous someone actually tried to stop her from running on stage?

Beyoncé tried to stop Lil Mama

Near the end of Alicia Keys and Jay-Z’s performance, Lil Mama decided to run on stage and pose next to the duo despite being told not to by none other than Beyoncé.

Yes, Queen B herself tried to stop Lil Mama from crashing the stage, but the rapper didn’t listen and decided to do it anyway.

An old video has emerged on Twitter this week that shows Beyonce and Lil Mama standing at the side of the 2009 VMA’s stage.

Lil Mama tries to pull Beyoncé on stage with her but she refuses and tries to grab her hand and pull her back.

However, Lil Mama broke her hand free and ran off onto the stage, leaving Beyoncé shocked at what had just happened.

The Beyoncé clip went viral on Wednesday (December 8th) after Alicia Keys addressed the iconic 2009 moment for the first time in years.

In an interview with Complex, she said: “I remember absolutely nothing. I think I was so focussed on performing.”

She then revealed that she didn’t actually know Lil Mama was there, adding: “As far as I could see, we were doing what we planned to do the whole time and I’m telling you 100% I was oblivious to the idea that next to him was another person.”

It wasn’t until they got to the dressing room that Jay-Z told her what happened, and she didn’t see a clip of it until she was back home.

“I thought it was hysterical to be honest. The audacity, the balls are incredible. You kinda gotta love it… I thought it was actually kind of crazy to be that inspired.” she continued.

She wanted to drag Beyoncé on stage too

Lil Mama spoke to Complex after the incident and explained that she tried to drag Queen B on stage with her.

“As I’m walking, I stop, and I’m lik ‘come on, come on, let’s go,’ to Beyoncé,” she said. “And she’s like, ‘What?’ She couldn’t believe it.”

“I was trying to celebrate the city. Now that I’m a woman, how crazy would it have looked if she walked up there? They would have been like, [Beyoncé’s] jealous, she can’t stand to see [Jay Z] with another woman,” she continued.

“And here I am, someone who’s not in that state of mind, not thinking that way, just caught up in the moment. I look back and think, damn, she was right. I was tripping.”

Why did Lil Mama crash the performance?

12 years on, nobody really understands why Lil Mama decided to run on stage and poe with Jay-Z and Alicia Keys.

In the aftermath of the event, she spoke to MTV and said: “I want to apologise. I wasn’t trying to be disrespectful…I was feelin’ it and it just happened.”

She has said on numerous occasions that she simply got carried away and was so inspired by incredible performance that she wanted to join in.

However, she was heavily ridiculed by fans and subject to lots of hate on social media.
