Paul Merson has stated that he ‘hasn’t seen’ Liverpool’s bench go as crazy as they did on Saturday, since their 2-1 win at Aston Villa during their title-winning season, as he told Sky Sports News (04/11/21 at 5:20 pm).
Liverpool netted a stoppage-winner at Wolves yesterday when Divock Origi came off the bench to once again write his name into the history books.
The Belgian international may not start or play many games for Liverpool.
But, during the limited amount of minutes he has been handed by Jurgen Klopp, he has made some difference and scored some seriously important goals.
Where the one at Molineux will rank remains to be seen, but given that Chelsea dropped points against West Ham hours earlier, then it could prove to be a significant week in the title race.
Nonetheless, this is what Merson had to say about Liverpool’s bench following that late, late show by Origi.
“I haven’t seen the bench go like that for a long time,” said Merson. “The last time I think I saw the bench go like that was at Aston Villa away when they scored the two goals in the last minutes of injury time.
“That just shows you what a big, big three points that was. But if Jota scores, then it could have been a lot different.”

When Liverpool won the title, they rocked up at Villa Park during the early stages of that season and found themselves 1-0 down at half-time.
But the relentless Liverpool train didn’t stop on that afternoon, before Andy Robertson scored from the back post with minutes left on the clock, and then Sadio Mane in stoppage-time, helped seal the points for the Reds.
During that season, there were a number of late shows by Klopp’s side, including, for instance, against Crystal Palace.
If they start showcasing similar signs again, then the Anfield faithful will really start to believe that another Premier League title could be headed their way.
