There have been plenty of films and TV shows to make a song and dance about in 2021.

We saw the return of James Bond in No Time to Die, Tiger King returned to Netflix and December sees the Sex and the City women return in And Just Like That…

On the other hand, fans of all things musical were recently treated to an exciting new production of Annie courtesy of NBC.

Inspired by Little Orphan Annie by Harold Gray and, in turn, the 1977 musical, the network unveiled their vibrant production on Thursday, December 2nd 2021.

The American television special and its cast have been praised by both fans of previous iterations and fresh new audiences alike. However, after checking it out, some are curious about where the excitement was all captured.

Where was Annie Live filmed?

The NBC production of Annie Live was filmed entirely at Gold Coast Studios in Bethpage, New York.

Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic inevitably influenced production, with masks and so forth being worn by the audience and so forth.

Robert Greenblatt – the former NBC executive who produced the show – told Variety: “We’re observing all these protocols and being very, very careful. In rehearsals, the cast is singing and dancing and huffing and puffing in masks all day long.”

Ahead of the rehearsal, he also revealed: “When we set this show up at NBC nine months ago, we thought COVID would be so far in the rearview mirror.”

Due to the nature of the threat, Robert admitted that “this is a live broadcast. We can’t shut down and delay. If someone gets it, they’re out of the show.” Obviously, this creates an extra layer of pressure for all of the creatives aboard.

Indeed, this actually happened. Jane Krakowski was originally assigned to play Lily St. Regis but she tested positive in the weeks before the rehearsals began. She was later replaced by Megan Hilty, who joined the likes of Celina Smith, Taraji P. Henson, Harry Connick Jr., Nicole Scherzinger, and Tituss Burgess.

Preparations for the musical commenced back in August and rehearsals were ongoing in the month prior to the show’s premiere.

“We’re so thrilled to be here”

When asked by Broadway World, executive producer Neil Meron was asked whether shooting in New York was special:

“Producing this show in New York is probably the best place it can be produced because we’re close to Broadway, we’re close to this incredible talent pool, and nobody does musicals like the people that live and work in New York and so we’re so thrilled to be here.”

He also addressed what makes this production of Annie different: “We’re actually honoring what was done on stage in 1977 and making some adjustments for the times we live in so it is more expansive it is… the cast is incredibly diverse.

“We have added some songs that were not in the original production, but the shape of the show is 1977 and that’s never been recorded before.”
