Newcastle United are looking to bring Real Madrid star Luka Modric to Tyneside – and are prepared to pay huge money to make it happen.

That’s according to Real Madrid-based news outlet Defensa Central, who claim an exclusive on this story.

They claim that Newcastle is a favourite of Newcastle’s new owners and they want him on a free transfer next summer.

Newcastle would be willing to pay a staggering €16million-a-year to land Modric, which works out to around £260,000-a-week.

That’s a major pay increase Modric, but he doesn’t want to hear any offers and prefers to stay at Real Madrid.

Real are willing to give Modric an improved deal, but they can’t match Newcastle’s offer.

Modric is allegedly ‘not seduced’ by the millions on offer at Newcastle, and a move seems unlikely.

Newcastle face transfer window disconnect after Modric rumour

The Modric rumour emerging around the same time as Newcastle’s 1-1 home draw with Norwich City sums up the disconnect.

Newcastle are in a fight against relegation and the prospect of being the world’s richest club whilst playing in the second tier is very real.

Yet whilst Newcastle need immediate signings in January, they need to be realistic.

Luka Modric isn’t leaving Real Madrid any time soon to help Newcastle stay up, and even if they do, tempting him at the end of the season seems just as difficult.

Newcastle’s new owners chasing big names like Modric whilst the Magpies struggle on the pitch shows the strange times at St James’ Park, and PIF may need to set their initial targets a little lower.
