Brazilian side Flamengo are reportedly eyeing a move for former defender and current Arsenal player Pablo Mari, who only joined the Gunners in January 2020 as Mikel Arteta’s first signing.
According to Football London, the Rio de Janeiro-based club have been made aware of the 28-year-old defender’s situation in north London. Mari has hardly featured for Arsenal this season with Ben White and Gabriel Magalhaes becoming Mikel Arteta’s favoured centre-back partnership.
As reported by Sky Sports News, Arsenal paid a total of £12m to sign Mari in January last year, with Edu Gaspar key to the signing. However, it now looks as though the defender could be out the exit door already, with Flamengo keen to re-sign the Spaniard.
Mari initially impressed for the north London side after arriving from Flamengo, with the former Manchester City centre-back also having some bright moments last season.
However, two nightmare performances this campaign against Brentford and Chelsea saw Mari lose his spot in the starting XI. With the likes of Rob Holding and Calum Chambers also spending most of this season on the bench, the Spanish defender is nothing but a back-up option for Arteta.
Mari has only featured in the League Cup since his Premier League performances in August, meaning Flamengo have sniffed an opportunity.
Arsenal fans beg Flamengo to sign Mari
With the Spaniard the oldest centre-back on Arsenal’s books and William Saliba set to return to the first-team picture next season, some supporters on social media are hoping Mari is sold back to Flamengo in January.
After all, the defender has hardly featured for the Gunners this season. And with White and Gabriel the undisputed starting centre-backs, Mari is likely to be better off back at Flamengo.
Here’s what some Arsenal fans had to say on Twitter about Flamengo’s interest in Mari…
