So, what date will Maanaadu release for OTT streaming and which digital platform has snagged the exclusive broadcasting rights?

Maanaadu was postponed at the last-minute…

The August premiere of Maanaadu was then postponed following the restrictions imposed on cinema capacity because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, with yet another delay being announced in early November for the same reason.

The film was then scheduled to debut on November 25th, but concerns started to be raised after producer Suresh Kamatchi took to Twitter announcing that Maanaadu had been delayed for one final time.

“A creation created with a lot of dreams. I was looking forward to the delivery of this It is with great pain that I inform you that the release of #Maanaadu has been postponed due to unavoidable reasons.” – Suresh Kamatchi, via Twitter.

As reported by Sify, several of the 5 AM IST shows for Maanaadu were cancelled because of the announcement.

Maanaadu finally releases in theatres…

Thankfully, the crisis surrounding Maanaadu’s release was quickly resolved, with the movie premiering in theatres across the country from 7: 30 AM IST on November 25th.

According to a report from Zee News India, the last-minute postponement to Maanaadu was in relation to a KDM issue i.e., the Key Delivery Message, the way cinemas play copyright-encrypted content.

“Thanks to the cooperation extended by everyone, the issue has been resolved. Financiers will send a mail in the next five minutes and shows will begin by 7.30 a.m.” – Subramaniam, via Sify.

Producer Kamatchi would then state that “Now it’s our time. God is great. Thanks to everyone who stood for me.” He later added that “No matter how many difficulties arise, we will oppose them and overcome them. Did you think I would fall?”

At the time of writing, Maanaadu has grossed more than 30 Crore from box office earnings, making it one of the best premieres of 2021.

Maanaadu: OTT streaming release date and platform

On November 11th, it was revealed that the post-theatrical satellite and streaming rights for the Tamil version of Maanaadu had been acquired by Kalaignar TV and SonyLIV respectively.

At the time of writing, SonyLIV has not publicly confirmed a release date for streaming Maanaadu, but the movie will likely premiere on December 24th.

This is in accordance with the recent trend in the Indian cinema industry, where new titles release for OTT streaming four weeks after its theatrical debut.

SonyLiv currently offers several subscription plans that will provide access to Maanaadu when it releases:

  • Special Plan: Single screen for Rs 199 a year
  • Special Plus Plan: Single screen for Rs 399 a year
  • Premium Plan: Two concurrent screens for Rs 999 a yar

The broadcasting right for the Telugu version of the movie has been purchased by Geetha Arts through the Aha streaming service.

At the time of writing, no streaming platform has publicly confirmed the acquisition of the Malayalam, Kannada or Hindi languages.

However, if the movie is a major success in theatres, fans should expect a major streaming partner such as Netflix, Disney Plus Hotstar or Amazon Prime Video to purchase the streaming rights for one, or all, of these language versions.

This article will be updated as soon as more information on Maanaadu’s streaming launch is confirmed by an official source.
