The Beatles are undoubtedly one of the biggest bands in the history of music and the new documentary from Peter Jackson, Get Back, gives us one of the most candid and personal glimpses of the Fab Four we’ve ever seen.

Split over three parts, the documentary begins by running through a brief history of the band, with special attention being paid to a newspaper headline stating that Brian Epstein, ‘the man who made the Beatles’, had died at the age of 32.

But just who was Brian Epstein in relation to the Beatles and how did he pass away at such a young age?

The Beatles: Get Back release date and premise

The Beatles: Get Back premiered on Disney+ on Thursday, November 25th, 2021.

The Beatles are undoubtedly one of the biggest, if not the biggest, rock bands of all time and yet there is a huge amount of conjecture about exactly how the group broke up more than five decades ago.

Released in May 1970, Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s Let It Be film is regarded by many as only showing the darker side to the Beatles’ final recording sessions with tensions rising between the bandmates until they eventually went their separate ways.

Now, however, Peter Jackson has delved into more than 60 hours of footage that was recorded at the time to tell a more complete version of the story in his “documentary about a documentary” which involved many more jovial and humourous moments than the original film showed.

Who was Brian Epstein?

Brian Epstein was the manager of the Beatles until his death in 1967.

Liverpool-born Epstein is credited with discovering the band and became their manager in 1961.

He was a pivotal figure in the Beatles’ success, keeping the business and public image side in check while giving the Fab Four creative freedom over their music.

Brian Epstein was regularly seen alongside the Beatles at press events and was one of a number of people to be dubbed ‘the fifth Beatle’ by members of the band and press.

When the Beatles were awarded MBEs in 1965, there was a campaign to see Epstein awarded one too, with George Harrison saying that “MBE really stands for ‘Mr Brian Epstein.'”

How did Brian Epstein pass away?

Brian Epstein died at the age of 32 on August 27th, 1967 due to an accidental overdose of Carbrital, a type of sleeping pill.

According to The Times, the pathologist who examined Brian Epstein, Dr Donald Teare, stated that Epstein had been taking Carbrital for some time due to suffering from insomnia and that the amount of the drug in his system was a “low fatal level”

The Beatles did not attend Epstein’s funeral to allow his family some privacy and to avoid attracting the attention of fans and the media but did attend a memorial service a few weeks later at a Synagogue near Abbey Road Studios.

Brian Epstein’s death in 1967 is regarded as the beginning of the end for the Beatles, something which is referenced in the Get Back documentary.

“The Beatles have been in the doldrums for at least a year, ” said George Harrison. “Ever since Mr Epstein passed away, it’s never been the same.”
