Netflix has just launched their latest original anime ‘Super Crooks’, but will the series return for season 2 and if so, what date could it potentially release?

From High-Rise Invasion and The Way of the Househusband to Great Pretender and Record of Ragnarök, it’s been a stellar year for original Netflix anime.

This week, the platform added their latest title to its already-vast library of anime content with the super-fun and super-evil, Super Crooks.

The anime based on Mark Millar’s four-issue comic series premiered on November 25th to a fantastic global reception.

However, fans are already desperate to know if Super Crooks has been renewed for season 2 and what date another thrilling heist-adventure could release worldwide.

Super Crooks season 2…

At the time of writing, Super Crooks has not been renewed for season 2 by either Netflix or the Studio Bones production company. However, the streaming giant makes a habit out of waiting several weeks in order to gauge audience viewership before making a decision on a renewal – so fans shouldn’t panic just yet.

Whilst our supervillain crew have each gone their separate ways, the finale did set up a second potential season with Mr Matts returning to his tyrannical role as the leader of The Network.

However, by the time the credits had rolled on Super Crooks episode 13, the show had completely adapted the four-issue comic book series that it was adapted from. This means that Super Crooks is entirely out of source material, which is usually a bad sign for the renewal of any anime series.

The good news is that the original comic was only adapted in the final episodes; the content up until episode 10 (Carmine) was an original storyline from Studio Bones. If the production team were able to create original Super Crooks content for episodes 1-10, then perhaps creating an entirely new second season will become more realistic.

The final decision on renewing Super Crooks for season 2, like all Netflix titles, will be down to viewership i.e., how many households stream the series.

How is season 1 being rated?

Super Crooks season 1 has received generally positive reviews from both fans and critics alike.

The anime is scoring a respectable 7.06/10 on MyAnimeList, 7.5/10 on IMDB and a fantastic 8.6/10 on Ratin Graph; with all three scores slowly climbing over the past opening weekend.

As appropriately stated by the number one review on IMDB, the superhero genre had been “starting to go stale” with adult series such as “Invincible and The Boys utilising the narrative perspective of the line between heroes and villains being blurred.”

“I’m pleasantly surprised by how refreshing this show is. The elements of the characters gives you a wholesome suicide squad vibe. The animation is beautiful and…combined with the funky music just gives off such a cool vibe. I’m glad that they stuck to the more adult themes as it separates it from anything Marvel or DC in regards to animation.” – User ‘benjaminhollis, via IMDB.

A similar sentiment was echoed by various critics, with IGN even calling Super Crooks “one of the biggest anime surprises of the year.”

“It’s short but sweet, a worthy addition to the Studio Bones’ hall of fame, with slick animation and whip-smart writing.” – Brittany Vincent, via IGN.

Super Crooks season 2 release date

As Super Crooks has not been officially renewed for season 2, neither Netflix nor Studio Bones have revealed a targeted release date.

Unfortunately, even if the anime is renewed for a second adventure, fans should expect a long wait before Johnny Bolt and his crew returns to Netflix.

This is because the production team will have to come up with an entirely original storyline for season 2, given that they have completely adapted the source material.

Not only will a fresh narrative need creating, but Studio Bones themselves also have an incredibly busy schedule for 2022.

Arguably one of the biggest and best animation studios currently working in the industry, Bones is responsible for the likes of My Hero Academia, Mob Psycho 100 and Bungo Stray Dogs.

The problem is that these three massive franchises all have new seasons set to premiere in 2022 already; so Studio Bones will be likely be focusing on these projects, leaving Super Crooks on the shelf until their schedule becomes open.

Overall, HITC predicts that Super Crooks will return for season 2 with an original storyline, but in the latter stages of 2022, perhaps even 2023, considering the timeline for Bones’ other more lucrative titles.

This article will be updated as soon as more information on Super Crooks season 2 is shared by an official source.
