Garth Crooks has written on BBC Sport that Liverpool have a weak link in Thiago Alcantara.

The former Tottenham Hotspur forward has said that Thiago’s lack of pace is a problem for Liverpool.

Crooks has said that when Liverpool do not dominate possession in midfield, then Thiago is a problem.

The Englishman made the comments while including Thiago in his Premier League Team of the Week for BBC Sport.

Thiago, who cost Liverpool £20 million (BBC Sport), scored for Liverpool in their 4-0 win against Southampton at Anfield in the Premier League on Saturday.

Garth Crooks verdict on Thiago

Crooks wrote about Thiago on BBC Sport: “The Spaniard has never totally convinced me he has acclimatised to the intensity of the Premier League.

“There is no doubt he can play, but when the game becomes physical or hectic I often feel his lack of pace limits his ability to engage and the game starts to pass him by. Liverpool’s dominance of Southampton allowed them to control the game – Thiago in particular.

“He’s masterful on the ball and has the most velvet touch. This is all very well when your team is in control but Liverpool need the occasional rottweiler (enforcer) in midfield and that, he is not.”

Thiago is important for Liverpool

Thiago is a very classy footballer.

Yes, the Spain international is not the quickest of players.

And the 30-year-old is not an enforcer in midfield.

But we cannot ignore what Thiago does.

In our opinion, we should focus on what Thiago can do and not what he cannot do.

The former Barcelona star is a brilliant passer of the ball.

Thiago calms things down in the middle of the park, picks the right passes and moves the team forward.

For Liverpool to win the Premier League and the Champions League this season, Thiago will be a key figure.
