Federico Fernandez has faded out of the Newcastle United squad as the season has progressed. The past few weeks have seen him not even make the match squad. It seemed that Steve Bruce and Graeme Jones didn’t think the Argentine was training or performing as well as the other defenders.

The magpie’s defence is a massive problem this season and questions are being asked of the defence. Performances from Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark have left many fans frustrated as to why they start but Fernandez doesn’t.

The attitude of Fernandez impresses Newcastle boss

The 32-year-old signed a new two-year contract in the summer and is in the eyes of many is the best centre-back available for selection. Whilst he hasn’t featured under Eddie Howe, a suspension to captain Lascelles may see Fernandez given another chance.

However, recent comments from Howe suggest Fernandez still has a chance to gain playing opportunities. In an interview with BBC Newcastle, he had this to say about the Argentine, “I’ve been impressed by, firstly, him as a person, and his attitude. He’s certainly someone that’s in consideration.”

Hectic period and experience may see the Argentinian back on the pitch

The upcoming Christmas period could be the ideal time for Fernandez to cement himself back in the starting XI. Fernandez may have a chance to get some minutes and prove why he should be in contention.

Additionally, the January transfer window is a month away. Newcastle will be looking to bring in new recruits who can help them avoid the drop. With the defence being the Achilles heel this season, Fernandez will want to show they can still hold their own.

Until January, the club will have to use the resources it has. What Fernandez offers at centre-back is plenty of experience in the top flight. He signed for Swansea City in 2014 and four years later he then joined Newcastle four years later. Furthermore, he has 32 caps for Argentina and has played in the top divisions in Italy (with Napoli) and Spain (with Getafe).

It’s all up for grabs

It appears from the recent comments he’s impressed with him in training, so hope may not be lost. The suspicion of Lascelles and the Christmas schedule means that there could well be opportunities for him to impress.

There are some very challenging games ahead for Newcastle United. If they are to stay up, they’re going to need to get the best they can out of the current group of players. For the likes of Fernandez, it could be a fresh start and a chance to revive his first-team place.
