Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta suggests that he has been very impressed by Gabriel Martinelli in training recently, with his comments to BBC Sport.

Working hard

Martinelli came off the bench for Arsenal against Newcastle United at the weekend, and it did not take him long to get on the scoresheet.

The Brazilian provided a beautiful finish to wrap up the three points for the Gunners in a 2-0 win over Newcastle.

Martinelli has actually suffered with only having limited minutes this season.

But Arteta says that the young striker has helped himself stay sharp, as he always puts in so much effort on the training ground.

Arteta said: “There are players who understand decisions and are respectful, but inside they complain or find excuses.

“Gabi, like others we have, and I am really lucky to have them, they are respectful and patient but they challenge every decision in the right way.

“This is what happens when you train like he does, when you play, you are ready.”

More chances?

Whether Martinelli’s goal could lead to him being given more opportunities remains to be seen.

Arsenal supporters have often called for Martinelli to be used more, but Arteta seems to have some doubts over whether the 20-year-old is ready for a starting place.

The strike was actually the youngster’s first goal of the season, and should help him put some pressure on the likes of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang.

Arsenal’s win over Newcastle was ultimately well deserved too.

The Gunners were the dominant force in the match, as they plunged Eddie Howe’s side into further relegation trouble.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are now sat just one point outside of the Champions League qualification spots.
