FC Barcelona reportedly met with Manchester City officials this week to discuss attacker Ferran Torres, with Xavi Hernandez keen to sign the Spanish international.

According to ESPN, the La Liga side, who sit seventh in the standings, landed in England on Friday to talk about a potential transfer. With the report stating that an approach has already been made by Barcelona to sign Torres.

As per the report, Txiki Begiristain is reluctant to let Torres leave, with the club placing a €40m (£34m) price tag on the former Valencia star. However, given Barcelona’s dire financial situation, a transfer is extremely unlikely.

The Catalan giants are over €1bn in debt. With Xavi’s side eager to offload numerous players to raise funds to clear their financial problems. Yet despite this, Barcelona remain keen to bring in fresh faces, and Torres is a target.

Torres is reportedly eager to return to Spain despite his impressive form for City and how much Pep Guardiola rates the youngster. Since landing in England, the 21-year-old has evolved from a winger to the focal point of the attack with stunning results.

Indeed, Torres has scored 16 goals in 43 appearances for City since joining in 2020. With the attacker bagging another 12 in 22 caps for Spain. An impressive record for a player who is learning the ropes of playing up front.

With Torres seemingly eager to return to Spain and Barcelona keen on the forward, it could be difficult for City to retain their young attacker. However, Guardiola and Begiristain must do all that they can to keep the prospect in Manchester.

The former La Liga star has been one of the best bargains City have picked up in recent years. Torres signed for the reigning Premier League champions for just £19m according to ESPN. And whilst the Citzyens could recoup a tidy profit for the Spaniard, money is something the Manchester side hardly have to worry about.

Indeed, Torres has been touted by some supporters as a potential successor to Sergio Aguero. But interest from Barcelona could derail this fascinating narrative which so far has all the hallmarks to become reality based on the youngster’s record for City. And Guardiola must do everything to keep him in England because of it.
