Andy Gray believes that Mohamed Salah will not win the Ballon d’Or 2021, claiming Robert Lewandowski deserves to take it.

The 29-year-old Liverpool attacker has had a stunning 2021 up to now and is among those in contention to win the award for the first time.

Despite his form this calendar year, Salah is a massive underdog to win the coveted prize.

Lionel Messi is a big favourite to win it for a seventh time, after helping to break Argentina’s Copa America hoodoo during the summer.

But Premier League pundit Gray has claimed that Salah deserves it over Messi – but not the Bayern Munich phenom.

He told Bein Sport: “Listen, who knows what FIFA will do. If you’re looking at the last 12 months, then Mohamed Salah probably has a bigger sense of winning it than Ronaldo or Messi.

“But I just think having not given it to Lewandowski because of the pandemic last year, I mean to ignore him again [would be unthinkable]. If you look at his numbers, it’s sensational!”

Is he right?

Well, kind of.

Since football returned in May 2020, the Poland marksman has netted 89 goals in 73 matches – and that’s just for Bayern.

As lethal as Salah’s been under Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp this year, he can’t get near what Lewandowski’s been doing in Germany and Europe.

Even Klopp wouldn’t complain if Lewandowski were to win it.

After all, it was the German manager who discovered the 33-year-old in 2010, signing him for Borussia Dortmund for a bargain £4 million after obsessively scouting him.

And Klopp – who was Liverpool boss at the time – even claimed that Lewandowski is the best player that he’s ever worked with, which is a massive feather in the big man’s cap.

In any case, Messi is still likely to scoop it, but Klopp’s former gem certainly deserves it.
