Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon has expressed a concern surrounding Liverpool star Thiago Alcantara and how he fits into Jurgen Klopp’s system.

Speaking to, the five-time Scottish Premiership winning coach claimed that the Spanish international doesn’t dominate games as much as fellow top-level Premier League midfielders. With Lennon name-dropping Manchester City star Rodri and Chelsea duo Jorginho and N’Golo Kante.

Thiago is currently enjoying the best spell of his Liverpool career. With the midfielder scoring one of the goals of the season midweek against FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League. And the Reds are benefitting from this form.

Klopp’s side claimed another 4-0 Premier League win at Anfield this weekend against Southampton. With Thiago again on the scoresheet as Liverpool continued their Premier League title charge. But for Lennon, the former Bayern Munich star isn’t what the Merseyside giants need.

Lennon said when asked about the quality of Thiago: “His goal against Porto on Wednesday was wonderful, but I don’t think he dominates the game the way a Rodri does for Man City, or a Jorginho or Kante (for Chelsea).

The former Celtic boss added: “Don’t get me wrong, I’m not criticising him as a player. He’s a world-class player in the right sort of team. I just don’t think he fits the profile for a Liverpool midfielder for the way Klopp wants to play.”

If there was ever a run of games that proved Thiago’s quality at Liverpool, it has been what we have witnessed over the past few weeks. Which throws scorn over Lennon’s confusing comments over the central midfielder.

Whilst there have been some incidents where Thiago’s style of play has been shoehorned into the Liverpool midfield, the Barcelona academy graduate has proved this season that his creative and metronomic qualities make the Reds better as a whole.

Indeed, a case could be made that Thiago alongside the likes of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson is the most balanced in the Premier League. And the Spanish star will be key if Liverpool are to fight for the title this season.
