Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, Duncan Castles has delivered an update on Mauricio Pochettino’s position at PSG amid links to both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

It’s no secret that Poch could be coming back to England at some point. United have been chasing him for quite some time, while Tottenham are reportedly already lining him up as  Antonio Conte’s successor.

However, getting the Argentine out of PSG seems like it won’t be an easy task.

The owners of the Paris club are less than impressed by Pochettino’s recent behaviour, but they are standing firm and apparently will not allow him to leave the club before his contract expires, even though they’re less than impressed by the standard of his coaching.

What’s been said?

Castles spoke about Pochettino and his relationship with the board in Paris amid links to Spurs and United.

“His position at PSG has been significantly weakened by what he tried to do to get out of the club. Qatar know what he’s playing at, and they are not impressed,” Castles said.

“They are taking an approach that they have taken on multiple occasions with himself and Kylian Mbappe which is, ‘you do not choose when you leave this football club, you do not decide when you leave our employment, we decide when we want to dispense of your services or whether we want to retain you, regardless of whether or not we’re unimpressed with you as a coach’ – which is very strong information I have from the highest echelons in Qatar.”

“They are not going to be seen to allow him to leave when he chooses to leave to go to another job at another Champions League club, so he needs to sit back and wait for them to make a decision.”

Not easy

It seems as though it’s not going to be easy for Manchester United to get Pochettino this summer as he’ll still be under contract with PSG.

However, this is something of a boost for Tottenham if they do in fact want the Argentine back.

PSG won’t allow Pochettino to leave yet, but in 2023 his contract is up, and coincidentally, that’s when Antonio Conte’s Spurs deal is up.

Of course, Tottenham have the option to extend that for a further year, and they may choose to do so, but if the reports linking the Argentine with a return to north London are true, then Spurs may have quite a clear path to bringing him back.

This is a situation worth keeping an eye on, that’s for sure.
