Paul Merson has praised Liverpool forward Diogo Jota on Sky Sports News (5:23pm, November 27, 2021) after watching him in action against Southampton.

The former Arsenal star has said that he did not think that Jota would be playing regularly for Liverpool when he joined from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer of 2020.

The Portugal international forward scored twice for Liverpool against Southampton at Anfield on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side won the Premier League game 4-0.

Paul Merson’s Diogo Jota verdict

Merson said about Jota on Sky Sports News (5:23pm, November 27, 2021): “When he went there, I liked him, I thought he was a good player at Wolves, I thought there is no way he is playing in this team. No way with Firmino.”

The Sky Sports pundit added: “When he (Firmino) doesn’t play, Jota plays and he has literally settled quicker than snow, if I am being honest. He has been absolutely brilliant, and he has just carried that on.”

Diogo Jota is a Liverpool star

Jota is a brilliant footballer who makes it look so easy on the eye.

Just he did against Southampton on Saturday.

The Liverpool forward is a classy footballer who scores goals and create chances for his teammates.

Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are the celebrated front-three of Liverpool.

In our view, Jota is fast proving to be just as important as Salah, Mane and Firmino, as he showed against Southampton today.

The former Wolves star tends to play in place of Firmino, and he slots seamlessly in.

The Liverpool no. 20 has scored seven and provided one assist in 10 Premier League starts so far this season.

Jota scored nine goals in 12 league starts for the Reds last season.
