According to Duncan Castles, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a January move for Manchester United defender Eric Bailly.
Spurs being linked with Bailly raised a number of eyebrows in north London, and, to be honest, we can understand why.
The Ivorian isn’t exactly a Premier League star, he’s a fringe player at Manchester United and he’s been inconsistent ever since arriving in England in 2016.
However, it seems as though Antonio Conte rates him, but he’s not the only man to have sat in the Spurs dugout to have rated Bailly.
Indeed, during his time as Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho had good things to say about Bailly.
What’s Mourinho said about Bailly?
Mourinho had a lot of praise for the centre-back in 2018 after a pre-season game against Liverpool.
“He is a team boy, he is a great boy. He is an honest man, always ready to give everything for the team. That is why we have him, why we still have him and why he is going to stay with us because football teams need people like him, like Herrera; this kind of people where the club is more important than anything else,” Mourinho said to Manchester United’s official club website.
As Mourinho says, Bailly is a team player who is always ready to give his all for the side, and sometimes, that’s all you can ask for from a defender.
Antonio Conte will get Spurs’ defence organised, and if he has players who will buy into his philosophy, his defence won’t actually need to be incredibly talented.
Bailly could end up actually being something of a coup if Tottenham sign him.
