Arsenal fans are excited about the potential of seeing Arsene Wenger come back to the club in some capacity, after Mikel Arteta’s comments.

The return of Wenger?

Arteta suggested at his press conference yesterday, which was covered by BBC Sport, that he was working to get Wenger back to Arsenal.

He said: “Hopefully we can bring him close.

“What I can say is that I would like him to be much closer, personally, to me because I think it would be a great help, I think it would be a great help for the club.

“Things take time and I think he has to dictate those timings. What I can say is from my side and I can say, I think, on behalf of everybody, is that we would be delighted to have him much closer.”

Arteta, of course, worked with Wenger during his playing days at Arsenal.

He knows the Frenchman well, and could lean on him for some experience if he was to sign up.

Quite what Wenger’s role would be at the Emirates Stadium is not yet known.

Arteta was asked if he would be brought in as a club ambassador or in a coaching role, but he kept his cards close to his chest.

Despite the unclear nature of the comments, the plan has certainly excited Gunners fans – who would be delighted to see Wenger back at the club in some capacity.

A smart move?

Wenger hasn’t actually worked as a manager since he departed Arsenal back in 2018.

His return to Arsenal would obviously be exciting in some aspects.

He carries a huge presence around the club and still commands a great deal of respect.

Wenger’s wisdom would surely only benefit Arsenal’s current squad.

That being said, Arsenal have made good progress in recent times with their current coaching teams.

There have been signs that Arteta’s project in North London is beginning to take shape.

And Arsenal would have to be cautious in ensuring that Wenger’s arrival doesn’t change things too much on the training ground, if he was to be brought in in that sort of capacity.
