Alan Shearer may be more pleased than most if Newcastle United do manage to sign Georginio Wijnaldum in January.

Wijnaldum to Newcastle?

TeamTalk claimed earlier this week that Newcastle were looking at doing a deal to bring the midfielder back to St. James’ Park.

Newcastle are said to be eyeing up a swoop, as the Dutchman has struggled for game time at PSG.

When Wijnaldum was last in the Premier League with Liverpool, Shearer was one of his biggest fans.

He called him ‘absolutely sensational’ just a few years ago, and claimed he didn’t get enough praise in a column with The Sun.

He then went on to say to the BBC: “Wijnaldum is Mr Consistent. I don’t think Liverpool would be where they are without his performances. He offers solidity.

“He is a leader in that midfield. Not many people mention him compared to the others, but he has been a regular 8/10 each week.”

A bright signing?

If he could deliver 8/10 performances for Newcastle between January and the end of the season then he would certainly be a wonderful addition to Eddie Howe’s side.

When Wijnaldum was last at Newcastle his quality did shine through, but he was often accused of being a fair weather player.

Magpies fans often saw the best of Wijnaldum at St. James’ Park, only for him to have minimal impact during away matches.

He has grown as a player since leaving Tyneside though, and those accusations can no longer be thrown at him.

That is good news for Newcastle, as they desperately need players who are up for the fight.

Despite all their riches, Howe’s side’s start to the season has been woeful – and they are almost certain to be in a relegation battle for the rest of this campaign now.

Newcastle are currently winless over their first 12 games of the season, and sit five points adrift of safety.
