Christmas is the best time of the year for holiday-themed movies, snuggles on the sofa and hot drinks.

Every year, a number of films get released around Christmas to celebrate the spirit of the season.

The Santa Clause

The 1994 family comedy movie sees Tim Allen save Christmas and become the next Santa Claus.

The actor reprised his role in two sequels, Santa Clause 2 and Santa Clause 3, and they are all available on Disney+.

The second movie follows Tim Allen’s Santa Clause in the lookout for his Mrs. Clause.

Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause

The third part in the Santa Clause franchise is worth a watch too.

Home Alone

While some may argue whether the first two or the first three movies are the best in the franchise, Home Alone is one of the most-watched festive films every year.

Starring Macaulay Culkin, the first film follows his character Kevin who defends his home from burglars after he is left alone.

The first one and its sequels are streaming on Disney+.

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

The sequel sees Kevin all alone again after he boards a flight to New York City instead of Miami.

It’s as good as the first one for sure.

The 1997 movie, which stars former child actor Alex D. Linz and Scarlett Johansson, may have only a 4.5 IMDB rating but this shouldn’t stop you from giving it a go this season.

Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas

The live-action version of The Grinch, released in 2000, titled How The Grinch Stole Christmas is another classic.

Jingle All the Way

The 1996 family comedy movie fronted by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sinbad is a family favourite during Christmas.

Arthur Christmas

The 2011 film follows Santa Claus’ clumsy son, Arthur Claus, who embarks on a mission to save one girl’s Christmas when she is left without a gift.

There are several streaming services where you can rent the movie out such as Apple TV and Amazon Prime.

Love Actually

The 2003 romantic comedy boats a cast of A-listers including Colin Firth, Alan Rickman, Keira Knightley, Hugh Grant and more.

Love Actually is streaming on Netflix as of 2021.

The Holiday

One of the most loved holiday-themed rom-coms is certainly The Holiday.

The movie sees the characters of Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz exchange their homes for the holidays.


You need to get ready your maple syrup and sprinkles for the much-loved 2003 Christmas movie starring Will Ferrell.

The Polar Express

The animated film is based on the 1985 children’s book of the same name by Chris Van Allsburg and follows a young boy on a train to the North Pole.

Anna Kendrick and Bill Hader star in this Christmas-themed movie as Santa’s kids.

Love Hard

Love Hard is a 2021 Christmas-themed romantic comedy directed by Costa Rican director Hernán Jiménez.

It stars Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev, Never Have I Ever star Darren Barnet, Silicon Valley‘s Jimmy O. Yang and Glee star Harry Shum Jr, among others.

Die Hard

Is Die Hard a Christmas movie or not?

The debate has been on for many years but give it a go if you haven’t seen it.


Holidate is a romantic comedy holiday film that was released on Netflix on Netflix in 2020. It stars Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey.


Klaus was the first animated film from Netflix to be Oscar-nominated. The 2D-animated Christmas comedy written and directed by Sergio Pablos and starring the voices of Jason Schwartzman, J. K. Simmons and Rashida Jones was released in 2019.

The Christmas Chronicles

The Christmas Chronicles was released in 2019 on Netflix, followed by its sequel in 2020.

It is directed by Chris Columbus and stars Kurt Russell, Goldie Hawn and Judah Lewis.

The Princess Switch

This is the first of three movies starring Vanessa Hudgens.

The first Princess Switch was released in 2018, and its sequel, Switched Again, premiered in November 2020, while the third one arrived in November 2021 on Netflix.

Jingle Jangle is a musical fantasy film that was released on in 2020. It stars Forest Whitaker, Madalen Mills and Keegan-Michael Key.

A Castle for Christmas landed on Netflix in November 2021.

Starring Brooke Shields and Cary Elwes, the movie tells the story of Sophie Brown, a bestselling author who travels to Scotland to escape the spotlight.
