According to Il Romanista, Steven Gerrard has a major problem on his hands with Douglas Luiz now keen to leave Aston Villa.

What’s the story?

Well, this isn’t the most ideal news for Gerrard, as the Brazilian is a key player for Aston Villa – Roma are interested in his services.

Il Romanista believe Douglas Luiz has turned down a new contract at Villa Park, with his current terms set to expire in June 2023.

In that respect, if the Villans fail to sell the 23-year-old in 2022, they risk losing him for nothing in 2023.

Having spent £15m on him, that would be a real blow.

Il Romanista add that Aston Villa want €35m (£29m) for their No.6, which is said to be more than Roma and José Mourinho are willing to spend.

Douglas Luiz’s agent is also said to have good connections to Roma and Italian football in general, so he will attempt to facilitate a move.

Make no mistake about it, losing Douglas Luiz would be a real blow for Gerrard and Villans – he’s an excellent player.

At 23, the former Manchester City maestro is also yet to hit his best levels.

However, Gerrard has a replacement right under his nose in Morgan Sanson.

Dean Smith spent £16m on the Frenchman back in January, but he’s made just ten appearances after struggling to break into the starting XI.

Nevertheless, Sanson is a fine player who operates in a similar role to Douglas Luiz, and he certainly didn’t come cheap at £16m.

As a result, it’s time for Gerrard to start using him, if Douglas Luiz really does want an exit from Villa Park.
