Jordan Henderson has congratulated Tyler Morton on Twitter after making his Champions League debut, as Liverpool beat Porto 2-0 to maintain their 100% run in Group B so far.

Jurgen Klopp turned to Morton to anchor the Reds engine room in place of Fabinho against the Primeira Liga leaders. He felt fit to rest the Brazilian with a last 16 spot already secured.

Morton played the full 90-minutes against Porto, despite the Liverpool gem only making his Premier League bow on Saturday. The England U20 international came off the bench in the 84th-minute of the Merseyside outfit’s 4-0 win over Arsenal for his first taste of Anfield.

Morton had previously only tasted senior action on the road before featuring as Liverpool hosted Arsenal. He made his first-team bow at Norwich City in September before earning his first senior start away to Preston North End last month, both in the Carabao Cup.

Yet the occasion of a European night at Anfield did not overawe the 19-year-old, who did superbly to clear Mehdi Taremi’s cross when he opted to square the ball over shooting.

Mohamed Salah also sealed the win for Liverpool over Porto from a move Morton started. Floating a long ball forward from the edge of the Reds’ area for the Egyptian to attack.

Salah slipped by Porto full-back Zaidu Sanusi to meet Morton’s pass, before playing a one-two with Henderson. A body faint later, the winger rolled the ball into the bottom corner.

Henderson praises Liverpool gem Morton in five-word verdict

Henderson later took to Twitter after Liverpool beat Porto to praise Morton for making his Champions League debut, just days after the teenager had earned his Premier League bow.

Ticking off the achievements, the Reds captain added: “Not a bad week! Congrats.”

Morton will hope his first Champions League start now leads to a maiden opening call in a Premier League match. He had only featured in two top-flight squads before facing Arsenal.
