Marvel has presented a Hawkeye-shaped gift as an early Christmas present this year, as the new series takes flight on Disney+. With the arrival of the first two episodes, we explore why Hawkeye, a.k.a. Clint Barton, is wearing a hearing aid.

The fifth Marvel production on the small screen will see Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton passing the Hawkeye mantle over to Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop. Vera Farmiga, Alaqua Cox, and of course, Lucky the Pizza Dog, will also be on hand to channel the festive spirit.

Florence Pugh will also be returning as Yelena Belova – established as Natasha Romanoff’s sister in Black Widow – however, her role has been kept out of all promotion for the series, indicating that she has a surprise up her sleeve.

Why does Hawkeye have a hearing aid?

During the premiere of the first trailer, eagle-eyed viewers spotted Clint wearing small, black hearing aids, provoking questions to be asked.

The addition of Clint’s hearing aid, and the introduction of his sudden disability, is actually a complete reflection of the character’s canon from Marvel comics.

As Hawkeye has different stories and variants, per se, in the comics, there are a few reasons why he could have hearing difficulties in the show.

Firstly, the four-issue comic from 1983 – delivered by Mark Gruenwald and Danny Bulanadi – saw Hawkeye bite down on one of his sonic arrows in order to block out Crossfire’s mind control, which left him severely deafened.

Matt Fraction and David Aja’s popular Hawkeye series saw Clown stab Clint in each ear with his arrows, which left the character deaf.

A separate flashback also showed how the abuse Clint suffered as a child, at the hands of his abusive father, had a lasting effect on his hearing.

Is Clint Barton completely deaf?

While some narratives in the comic have rendered Clint completely deaf, the character in the Hawkeye series is likely only partially deaf.

After Hawkeye’s event with the sonic arrows, he lost about 80% of his hearing. Alternatively, the lasting effect of his father’s abuse is only meant to have partially damaged his hearing as he got older.

Is Lucky the Pizza Dog his guide dog?

No, Lucky the Pizza Dog is not Hawkeye’s guide dog in the series, yet.

The comics state that Clint adopted Lucky – once called Arrow – after the canine survived a brutal attack during the archer’s fight against Ivan Banionis and his men.

Fans will have to wait and see how Lucky ties into the narrative in the series, as well as what route the showrunner has decided to go down in relation to his hearing loss.
