Marcelo Flores has only played an hour of Under-23s football in his fledgling career, yet the midfielder has already impressed Arsenal first-team manager Mikel Arteta, as per Goal.

Steve Bould handed the Mexican his U23 debut in one of his final acts as the coach in May. The Gunners then fired the 59-year-old in June to end his 33-year association with the club.

Kevin Betsy is yet to pick up from where Bould left and unleash Flores, with the 18-year-old exclusively playing U18s football so far this term. He has enjoyed a stunning run, however.

Flores has scored six goals and laid on two assists in nine U18 Premier League outings so far this term. His haul includes a hat-trick against Aston Villa, while starting all appearances.

The Ontario, Canada-born playmaker’s form has caught Arteta’s attention, with the Arsenal boss inviting Flores to train with the first-team fold several times over the past 12-months.

Flores has seemingly taken what he has learned from training with the Arsenal first-team under Arteta and run with it. As well as shining in the U18s, he earned the honour of being the first to be named the Player of the Tournament at the inaugural 2021 Revelations Cup.

The teenager, who only turned 18 last month, was the star of the show for Mexico at the competition. He scored against the United States U20s and the winner against Brazil U18s.

As well as scoring against the USA, Flores provided the assist for Ali Avila to net the winner last week. He could now find Gerardo Martino hands him his senior El Tri debut soon.

Flores will want U23s chances to progress at Arsenal

Yet despite Flores shining for Arsenal’s U18s, Mexico’s U20s and impressing first-team boss Arteta, he is yet to find Betsy offer the chances he likely anticipated entering the season.

Given his form in Dan Micciche’s ranks, it can only be a matter of time before Betsy warms to Flores’ skill. Which is surely the next step on the young maestro’s path to the senior side.
