Liverpool and Newcastle United have both been chasing Lille striker Jonathan David – and he is now earning lofty comparisons.

Canada have never really been a footballing powerhouse, but they’re starting to generate some real talent.

Alphonso Davies, Tajon Buchanan and Cyle Larin are all thriving, as is midfielder Stephen Eustaquio.

Right now though, the hottest talent is striker David.

TSN in Canada reported back in August that David is a top priority for Liverpool as they chase a new striker.

Earlier this month, Le10 Sport added that Newcastle have joined the race thanks to their takeover.

David is in blistering form right now. By scoring twice against Monaco over the weekend, David has now scored 10 times in 14 Ligue 1 games.

Lille’s financial situation means 21-year-old David is likely to move on in 2022.

Liverpool and Newcastle will fight it out for David, who is now being compared to other strikers in Europe.

French football expert Adam White has written for The Guardian that elements of David’s game are similar to Wissam Ben Yedder or even former Liverpool hero Luis Suarez.

White notes that David isn’t exactly suited to play up top on his own but has fine close control and link-up play, just like Ben Yedder and Suarez.

Suarez has been a world-renowned star for many years, but Ben Yedder has been quality in his own right.

If David can reach either of their levels, he will be one of Europe’s best strikers – and Liverpool or Newcastle would be lucky to have him.
