Michael Owen has revealed that Steven Gerrard is ‘very proud’ of the work that he did at Rangers.
Gerrard quit Rangers to become Dean Smith’s successor at Aston Villa last week.
And the 41-year-old has enjoyed a brilliant start to life as Aston Villa boss, overseeing a 2-0 win over Brighton on Saturday.
The Liverpool icon enjoyed three-and-a-half years at Ibrox and won a Scottish Premiership title last season.
That was Rangers’ first league title since 2010 and Owen, who spoke to his former teammate personally this week, claims that the new Villa boss remains proud of his achievements in Glasgow.
He told Optus Sport: “He’s delighted to be back in the Premier League. I spoke to him earlier in the week. He’s really proud of what he did at Rangers.
“He’s excited to be back with his family and really got the bit between his teeth. Fantastic start.”
New dawn
Rangers fans won’t forget about Gerrard anytime soon, such was his impact.
But there’s a new era at Ibrox now after Giovanni van Bronckhorst was named as his successor.
Given that he used to play for the Gers, there’s a lot more buzz around this disappointment than Gerrard’s back in 2018.
Plus, the Dutchman comes to Scotland with a glowing CV, as opposed to Gerrard who was just starting his senior managerial career in Scotland.
Van Bronckhorst led Feyenoord to an Eredivisie title a few years ago and the odds of him succeeding at Rangers once again are much higher because of his experience.e
