Who is Ivo Shandor in Ghostbusters: Afterlife?

Ivo Shandor appeared in Ghostbusters: Afterlife briefly, after being awoken from his slumber by the kids who were attempting to stop the rise of Gozer.

Ivo is shown asleep within a glass coffin before awakening and bursting out, much to the young characters’ surprise – even though nothing was surprising at this point.

In Ghostbusters lore, Ivo is described as the leader and devout worshiper of the Cult of Gozer – a character who was once an architect and doctor by trade.

He is present in Ghostbusters: Afterlife because the ancient antagonist, Gozer the Gozerian, was rising and his ghost rose with it.

Who plays the character?

Despite Ivo playing such a small part in the film, the character was played by J.K. Simmons.

Even though most of Simmons’ fans will be preparing to see him resume the mantle of J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the actor is almost unrecognizable with his mad scientist demeanor.

Has the villain appeared before?

Yes, the villain has appeared in the Ghostbusters franchise plenty of times before.

The first Ghostbusters film from 1984 revealed that Ivo was the designer of 550 Central Park West – also known as ‘Spook Central’ – where the cult leader and other worshipers would perform rituals on the building’s rooftop.

Additionally, Ivo was also the main villain of Ghostbusters: The Video Game, when the paranormal hunters encountered a fierce battle with the leader, who was later defeated.
