Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is now out and fans want to know the best starters to use and whether they are shiny locked in BD and SP.

Depending on which version you purchased, you will have different creatures to catch and assemble. One of the main differences is the cover stars Dialga and Palkia, but there are dozens of other exclusives too.

Exclusives are irrelevant if you purchased the duo pack, but – if you chose either BD or SP – you still have to choose between the same three beginning pocket monsters.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl starters

The Pokemon Brilliant and Shining Pearl starters are Pipulp, Chimchar, and Turtwig, and it’s up to you to decide who is the best option.

Pipulp is arguably the most adorable, but some of the decision boils down to whether you prefer water, fire, or grass-type creatures. You also want to take into consideration their final evolution:

  • Pipulp – Empoleon
  • Chimchar – Infernape
  • Turtwig – Torterra

Who is the best?

The best beginning pocket monster to use is a personal choice but there are a few caveats that you must know.

For starters, Chimchar has the most difficult opening Gym battle against Roark as he is weak to Rock-type attacks. He’s an underdog at first who gets whacked about a lot, but he’s a champion at the end who is incredibly useful with his fire attacks.

Pipulp, on the other hand, isn’t weak to Rock-type attacks but is weak to Grass-type powers in the second gym. However, away from gyms, we wouldn’t recommend Pipulp if you own Shining Pearl as it is a Water-type creature just like Palkia.

Lastly, Turtwig is probably the easiest to use and win with at the beginning of the game. It also reaches its final evolution, Torterra, before both Pipulp and Chimchar.

We personally have opted for Chimchar because of his final evolution Infernape. However, there’s no wrong answer, we would just recommend Turtwig for series newcomers and wouldn’t recommend Pipulp for those who bought SP.
