Arsène Wenger has been speaking to Ian Wright about a range of topics, as the two Arsenal legends engaged in a Q&A with Ladbible TV.

What’s the story?

Well, when asked which hidden gems Arsenal should be signing, Wenger joked that Mikel Arteta should snap up Erling Braut Haaland.

The 15-cap Norway international was an relatively unknown quantity in 2018/19, which is perhaps why Wenger mentioned him.

Now, there are few people who haven’t heard of the prolific 21-year-old.

When asked the question, Wenger said with a grin on his face: “I feel, Haaland for example”.

Wright quickly snapped back with: “There’s nothing hidden about him!”

You can say that again – at the moment, Haaland would walk into any side in Europe. He’s arguably the most in-demand footballer on the planet.

Interestingly, the Borussia Dortmund striker has a £64m release clause in his contract, which becomes active in June.

Undoubtedly, that is sure to ignite a multi-club bidding war for the striker who has already scored 119 goals throughout his short career so far.

Financially, there’s no reason why the Gunners can’t activate that £64m release clause.

The problem lies with Haaland’s agent, Mino Raiola, and the huge agency fees he usually demands – the level of competition will also be an issue.

There is also Newcastle, who, after the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia arrived on Tyneside with their £320bn, have made Haaland a target (AS).

Interestingly, Arteta seems to be in the market for a Haaland-type striker, as Gianluca Di Marzio believes contact was made with Fiorentina for Dusan Vlahovic.

The Serbian has actually been compared to Haaland, so it certainly seems as if Edu and Arteta are on the hunt for a physical No.9.

With Haaland appearing incredibly tough to sign, perhaps a swoop for the Serie A marksman would be a more sensible decision.
