According to MARCA, Ramon Planes is considering a move abroad after quitting his job at Barcelona, with Newcastle a possible destination.

What’s the story?

Well, Newcastle could finally be about to hire a Sporting Director.

Planes suddenly quit his job at Barcelona on Tuesday, despite having a contract at the Camp Nou until 30th June 2022.

Barcelona confirmed that the 54-year-old asked to leave.

The timing is certainly interesting given the vacancy at Newcastle, and MARCA believe he could join the Magpies.

It’s said that Planes is studying options to continue his career overseas, with St James’ Park a potential settling point.

Forget Eddie Howe and Amanda Staveley – a Director of Football in the modern era is vital, and one must be hired as soon as possible.

What could Ramon Planes offer Newcastle?

The Spaniard is not a well known figure, as is the case when it comes to most Sporting Directors – they often operate in the shadows.

However, Planes is perhaps best known for his work in bringing some genuine wonderkids to Barcelona.

The Technical Director was key in signing Pedri and Ronald Araujo for Barcelona, while he also helped develop Gavi and Ilaix Moriba.

Aside from future stars, Planes showed he also knows how to pull off the headline deals as well – he oversaw the £107m signing of Antoine Griezmann.

With Newcastle ready to spend millions, it would be good to have a Director who can find wonderkids, but also ready made players for the present.

Keep an eye on this saga, as it remains to be seen why Planes suddenly quit.
