Who was Brian Rhyne?

Brian Rhyne and Joe Exotic met in the 1980s and moved together to live in a trailer in Arlington, Texas.

In an interview with Intelligencer, Brian was described as a “slender, sassy 19-year-old”.

The report added that Joe bought an old ranch in Wynnewood, Oklahoma which he called the Garold Wayne Exotic Animal Memorial Park.

He and Brian moved into a house there and raised animals together.

Explaining more about how they met, Joe Exotic said: “I met Brian when I was working security at The Round-Up, and he was a customer. We dated for a while and got married, and were together 16 years.”

Joe’s niece spoke about him

In episode 2 of Tiger King 2, Joe’s niece Chealsi Putman shared more details about the relationship of his uncle and Brian.

“Brian was the glue of the family, he always told Joe like it was,” she explained. “Joe stayed in line with Brian. But he originally got sick with lung cancer and it progressed a little faster because Brian was HIV positive.”

Chealsi added: “Brian was included in everything. I called Brian ‘Uncle Brian’ before I did Joe.”

Brian’s devastating death

Former GW Zoo board member, Heidi Somers, opened up about the devastating death of Brian.

Brian passed away from complications related to HIV in 2001.

“Joe would rush up to the hospital for this, that or the other,” Heidi said. “And then the one time he took him to the hospital, Brian died at the parking lot on the way home.

“And he called me, that was a gut-wrenching conversation. Brian had just died in his arms.

Heidi said that Brian was Joe Exotic’s “anchor” and “normal”.

Former employee Gaylynn Eastwood went on to add: “The Joe in 2000, I never saw one shred of narcissism, but after Brian passed away, Joe was a totally changed person”.
