Newcastle United are interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain defender Abdou Diallo during the upcoming January transfer window.
That’s according to French news outlet Foot Mercato, who claim that Diallo is one of the first prime targets for Newcastle’s new owners.
Newcastle absolutely need to find defensive additions in January and Diallo is emerging as a possible candidate.
Who is Newcastle target Diallo?
Diallo, 25, came through with hometown club Tours before joining the Monaco ranks in 2011.
After six years at Monaco, Diallo made a move to Germany with Mainz – and what a move that proved to be for the centre back.
Diallo was branded a ‘natural-born defensive leader’ on the Bundesliga’s official website during his time with Mainz.
The Senegal international earned a huge €28million (£24million) in 2018 as he joined Borussia Dortmund, where his rapid rise continued.
Just one year with Mainz and just one year with Dortmund saw Diallo join Paris Saint-Germain in 2019, with PSG paying €32million (£27million).
Diallo hasn’t always been a regular for PSG, losing out on playing time at centre back to the likes of Marquinhos, Thiago Silva and Presnel Kimpembe over the years.
With being naturally left-footed, Diallo has also turned out at left back for PSG. This term, Diallo has started seven league games under Mauricio Pochettino, all at left back.
Diallo is versatile, quick, strong, more than capable on the ball and solid in the tackle. It hasn’t quite worked for him at PSG, but Diallo could be a huge coup for Newcastle.
