Edgardo Lasalvia has told TuttoJuve that he has discussed transfers for Darwin Nunez with ‘top European clubs’, amid reported interest from Liverpool in the prolific Benfica striker.

Nunez has put a number of teams on alert after a sensational start to the season with eight goals in 13 games. Building on a stellar 2020/21, with 14 goals and 12 assists in 44 outings.

The Uruguayan’s efforts this term even include scoring two against Barcelona and once at Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Helping to a 3-0 win at home to the Blaugrana.

Liverpool are paying close attention to Nunez, with a view to a transfer for the Benfica ace. But the Daily Star note the Reds trail Manchester City as they have a superb relationship with Benfica, and face competition from Manchester United, Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

A deal for Nunez – who Luis Suarez once told Barcelona to sign – would also cost as much as £70m. Just 14-months since As Aguias paid Almeria €24m (£20m) for the 22-year-old.

Lasalvia confirms transfer talks for Benfica star and Liverpool target Nunez

Nunez may not stay at Benfica for too much longer, though, as his agent, Lasalvia, intends to speak with the Primeira Liga outfit over the reported Liverpool target’s future soon.

Lasalvia has also spoken with potential suitors already, but does not want the speculation to distract his client.

“Darwin really has great potential, but we are not conditioned by the rumours of the newspapers,” Lasalvia said. “We look at him with tranquillity and pride.

“He must not be enchanted by rumours, he is aware of living a beautiful moment. He already knows that he will have to continue like this, keeping his feet on the ground.

“Out of respect and as a matter of professionalism, I cannot say the names of the teams we spoke to. The top European clubs have called us to buy Darwin, this means that he is working well.

“We are in contact with Benfica in the coming days. I will arrive in Europe and there will be a meeting with [Aguias President] Rui Costa. We will work for a negotiation, which will take place in June or July. We are calm, we try to do the best for him and for Benfica.”

Nunez’s start to the season also convinced Uruguay boss Oscar Tabarez to recall the striker to his squad last month.

But the forward has only started one senior international fixture after six-caps to date. He also sat out their defeat to Argentina last Friday after feeling discomfort in his knee.
