How did the heartwarming holiday tradition start?

In 2016, Jamal Hinton went viral after getting a mistaken text message from a random phone number with an invite to Thanksgiving dinner.

After selfies were exchanged, it was established that Wanda Dench and Jamal Hinton were not related. But he asked if he could “still get a plate” and Wanda was more than happy to oblige.

Jamal and Wanda have carried on the tradition for six years

Well, the rest is history as the heartwarming tradition has continued for the past six years.

Since he was 17, Jamal Hinton who is from Phoenix has spent every Thanksgiving at the Dench’s home in Mesa.

According to the New York Times, the pair would meet up for dinners and barbecues with their partners as their friendship blossomed.

Tragically, Wanda’s husband Lonnie Dench passed away after a battle with Coronavirus. In 2020, Hinton told CNN: “Lonnie was missing this year, and he was a big part of the Thanksgiving story and a big part of our lives, but that’s one thing Wanda and I know for sure. Lonnie would have been very angry if we didn’t have Thanksgiving together.”
