Rangers look to be closing in on Giovanni van Bronckhost as their new manager – but Jan Wouters may not be joining him at Ibrox.

Rangers lost manager Steven Gerrard to Aston Villa on Thursday, with the Liverpool legend replacing Dean Smith at Villa Park.

The Gers now have to move quickly to get a replacement in over the international break, but they appear to have a top target.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst had talks with Rangers on Saturday and a deal could be done within hours according to the Daily Record.

Some had wondered whether Van Bronckhorst would bring Wouters to Ibrox with him.

Wouters was a Rangers coach during Van Bronckhorst’s playing days at Ibrox. The 61-year-old then assisted van Bronckhorst at Feyenoord between 2015 and 2018.

Now though, former Rangers boss Alex McLeish has told Sportsound that he has spoken to Wouters about a return to Ibrox.

McLeish claims Wouters ‘played dumb’ and claimed that the move isn’t for him right now, adding that is the only inside information he can provide.

“They need a young, vibrant manager, and Giovanni has some good experience,” said McLeish. “Jan Wouters will testify to that. I was actually texting him today and said, ‘are we going to be seeing you in Glasgow again?’ He played dumb so I’m taking it he’s not coming and Giovanni has moved on.”

“Jan maybe feels he’s done his bit in the game. That’s all the inside information I can give you! He says, ‘not for me’, so we’ll see,” he added.

It doesn’t sound like Wouters is heading back to Rangers, with Jean-Paul van Gastel linked with the job according to The Scottish Sun.
