Tim Sherwood has encouraged Newcastle United to move for James Tarkowski, claiming he could be ‘massive’ for their relegation fight.
Newcastle are in deep trouble as Eddie Howe inherits a squad that sit 19th in the Premier League table, five points adrift of safety.
The Telegraph reported in October that the Magpies could look to sign the big Burnley centre-back – who cost the Clarets £3 million – in January.
And Sherwood has certainly backed that potential transfer but added that the Turf Moor club could purposely inflate the price in the knowledge that newly-acquired United – whose owners have a fortune of £320 billion – are desperate.
He said to Optus Sport: “Tarkowski has been touted around. Burnley are a selling club to the likes of Newcastle. If they come, their [Burnley] eyes will light up because all of a sudden they can put another £10 million on the price.
“But that kid will hit the floor running. He’s no running. If he keeps himself fit, he’ll be massive for keeping that club up.”
Good signing?
In a word, absolutely.
The 28-year-old has an abundance of top-flight experience after playing 170 times in the Premier League.
Not only that, but he has a nasty streak which could and would benefit Newcastle.
He isn’t a nasty player per se, but he does do whatever it takes to stop the opposition and that’s precisely what Howe’s going to need from his defence.
In September, Gary Neville tore into the Clarets powerhouse for a challenge on Richarlison which, although not pretty, was effective and legal – well, he escaped punishment from Martin Atkinson.
