Newcastle United fans are excited about Amanda Staveley’s apparent plans to take the Sports Direct advertising down from around St. James’ Park, which she told the Daily Mail about.
What’s the story?
Newcastle are currently banned from agreeing new sponsorship deals following their takeover, but that embargo is set to be lifted in the near future.
The Magpies will then be able to agree to advertise new brands around the stadium.
And Staveley suggests that she does want to see the Sports Direct signs removed.
She said: “The Sports Direct signs I’m looking forward to coming down. It’s a slight frustration when I go into the stadium and I try and take a picture which doesn’t have Sports Direct in it.”
These advertisements are really the last reminder of the Mike Ashley regime at Newcastle.
Ashley controversially named St. James’ Park the Sports Direct Arena for a spell during his time in charge, which sparked fury among Newcastle fans.
And Magpies supporters are delighted to hear the plans to remove all the signage from the ground.
Making an impact
Newcastle’s new owners are now really starting to make their impact at the club.
While there is plenty of work to be done, PIF have now selected Eddie Howe as their manager, and the hope is that will improve the side’s fortunes on the pitch.
Howe inherits a Newcastle team which are badly struggling for form.
The Tynesiders are still winless in their first 11 games this season, and are now sat six points adrift of safety, meaning they will have to find some positive results sooner rather than later if they are to edge towards safety.
