Who is Amado Carrillo Fuentes?
Amado Carrillo Fuentes was known as a Mexican drug smuggler and leader of the Juárez cartel, played on Narcos: Mexico by José María Yazpik.
Nicknamed the El Senor de Los Cielos (The Lord of the Heavens), Fuentes was notorious for being one of the most powerful drug lords, whose claim to fame was his flawless smuggling network using private jets.
Moving from the Guadalajara cartel, Fuentes then began working for smuggler, Pablo Acosta, and took control of the plaza after Acosta’s death.
Is the Netflix character a real person?
Yes, Amado Carrillo Fuentes was a real drug lord who took over the Juárez cartel after assinating its previous leader, Rafael Aguilar Guajardo.
In real life, Fuentes carried the same nickname and infamous technique of drug smuggling by air. He was also known for laundering money in Colombia, in order to greenlight his fleet.
Is Fuentes still alive?
No, Amado Carrillo Fuentes died in 1997.
After becoming a primary person of interest for the U.S. and Mexican authorities, Fuentes decided to get intense facial plastic surgery and abdominal liposuction in order to drastically change his appearance.
However, Fuentes died in the hospital due to surgery complications. It is currently unknown what killed the drug lord, but reports say that it could have been down to his medication or a malfunction in the respirator.
