Rangers have lost manager Steven Gerrard to Aston Villa – and details are emerging about his blocked interest in Hibernian striker Kevin Nisbet.

Gerrard has completed his move to Villa today, replacing Dean Smith following his sacking on Sunday.

This leaves Rangers absolutely rocked, especially as Gerrard has taken his coaching staff to Villa Park with him.

The Athletic have now reported that Gerrard was frustrated at Rangers due to the transfer funds drying up.

One player Gerrard wanted was Hibs striker Nisbet. It’s noted that Gerrard took a liking to Nisbet after impressing against Rangers, just as he did with Jordan Jones and Borna Barisic in the past.

Gerrard wanted to bring Nisbet to Rangers, but the club simply couldn’t fund a move, possibly playing a role in Gerrard’s frustration.

Nisbet enduring difficult season after missing out on Rangers move

Nisbet cost Hibernian just £300,000 in the summer of 2020, but Hibs wanted £5million for him this past summer.

The 24-year-old starred lsat season with 18 goals across all competitions, but this season has been trickier.

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND – JULY 22: Kevin Nisbet of Hibernian FC before the UEFA Conference League second qualifying round first leg match between Hibernian FC and FC Santa Coloma at Easter Road on July 22, 2021 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Nisbet has only managed two goals in nine league games this season. In all competitions, Nisbet has hit four goals and two assists in 15 appearances.

Nisbet seems to have lost his scoring touch, and maybe Rangers were actually right not to sanction a £5million deal.

Without selling Alfredo Morelos, it’s clear that Rangers didn’t have that kind of cash to spend on another striker.

Fashion Sakala joined on a free transfer instead, and it will be interesting to see if Gerrard ends up dancing Nisbet for Villa down the line.
