More details on the upcoming live-action television adaptation of ‘One Piece’ has been shared, including confirmation that Mackenyu will play Zoro.

There may not be an upcoming Netflix series that has quite the hype and expectation from fans as the ‘One Piece’ live action adaptation.

The 10-episode series was first teased back in 2017 but this year, the streaming platform has shared various details about the upcoming project after images of the production set leaked online.

Now, Netflix and the Tomorrow Studios production company have revealed the main cast, including fan-favourite actor and rising star Mackenyu, who will play the legendary Zoro.

Mackenyu cast as Zoro in One Piece…

Netflix has been teasing the One Piece live action series for some time but on November 9th, the official cast list was finally shared online.

Playing the infamous Roronoa Zoro will be Japanese-American actor Mackenyu Arata, born Mackenyu Maeda.

Zoro is a fan favourite character in the hit franchise and is the first crewmate to join Monkey D. Luffy after being saved from being executed at the Marine Base by Captain Morgan.

The 24-year-old took to Instagram to share the news, stating that “I am thrilled to announce that I’ll be playing ZORO in the upcoming live action Netflix series ONE PIECE.”

Who is Mackenyu?

Mackenyu is a 24-year-old Japanese-American actor who was born in Los Angeles to Japanese parents Tamami and Sonny Chiba.  

He attended the Beverly Hills High School as part of their Advanced Placement Program, when he made his professional debut in a mini-television series called Team Astro in 2005, as well as a Japanese feature film called Oyaji (2007).

Mackenyu was inspired to become an actor at the age of 15 after working alongside the legendary late actor Haruma Miura in the live-action adaptation of Genjo Senki.

After working on several smaller projects, he decided to pursue a full-time career in acting, but in Japan where he said the variety of roles available would help him improve his skills.

His big breakthrough was in 2015 thanks to a feature film called Tadaima, a role that earned him Best Supporting Actor at the Asians on Film Awards. More awards came Mackenyu’s way in the years to come thanks to his performance in Chihayafuru, including Newcomer of the Year as well as nominations for Best New Artist and Best New Actor.

However, his most-famous role is still Yukishiro Enishi, the main villain in the final part of the Rurouni Kenshin movie saga.

Interestingly, Mackenyu has made a habit of supporting live-action adaptations of various hit franchises, appearing Kamen Rider, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and Tokyo Ghoul S.

Who else has been cast in the One Piece series?

Alongside Mackenyu will be a whole host of excellent actors and actresses, with the main six characters in season 1 being recently confirmed.

Luffy will be portrayed by Inaki Godoy, who is best-known for appearing in Who Killed Sara (2021) as Bruno and La querida del Centauro as El Gato.

Nami will be played by Emily Rudd, who shot to fame this year after her performance in Fear Street: Part Two as Cindy Berman.

Playing Usopp is Jacob Gibson, who fans may recognise as AJ Delajae from 2019’s Greenleaf.

Finally, we have Taz Skylar as Sanji, who is best-known for his roles in Villain (2020), The Kill Team (2019) and Boiling Point (2021).
