Last summer, AC Milan allowed their most important player to leave the San Siro on a free transfer – just days after he was named player of the tournament at Euro 2020.

The Serie A giants wanted to keep Gianluigi Donnarumma. Who wouldn’t? He’s not only one of the planet’s finest goalkeepers but was also the poster boy of a new and exciting Milan side after making his debut as a willowy 16-year-old.

But while Milan were hopeful, they weren’t desperate – and certainly unwilling to meet ‘Dollarumma’s’ wage demands. After weeks of protracted negotiations, off he went, packed off to Paris Saint-Germain, his Rossoneri reputation in tatters.

As Donnarumma and then Hakan Calhanoglu discovered, Milan won’t be bullied. Either you accept their offer or you go. It really is that simple.

Franck Kessie, then, has taken a risk demanding a new deal worth £7.5 million a year (£150,000 a week) at the San Siro. According to Sky’s Gianluca Di Marzio, that’s far more than the £5.5 million offer currently on the table.

Liverpool and Tottenham fighting for AC Milan ace Franck Kessie

In July, Kessie claimed he wanted to stay at AC Milan “for life”. However, at this rate he’ll be lucky to be wearing red and black beyond January.

The former Atalanta enforcer is due to become a free agent in the summer and, if reports are to be believed, Milan would accept as little as £7 million in the winter window. However, that could change with the Serie A title looking like a two-horse race between them and Napoli.

Last week, Gazzetta dello Sport reported Tottenham Hotspur had entered advanced negotiations regarding a deal that would see Antonio Conte’s long-term target swap Milan for north London.

Liverpool appear to be their biggest competition, particularly with the Anfield giants struggling to control games in the post-Gini Wijnaldum era (Il Milanista).

Arsenal have also been linked.

It remains to be seen where Kessie is playing his football in 2022. But there’s a growing acceptance it won’t be Milan.

Here’s what some AC Milan fans on Twitter had to say about the Kessie to Liverpool or Tottenham rumours:
