Kris Boyd has told Sky Sports that it’s his understanding that Aston Villa ‘haven’t spoken’ to Rangers about Steven Gerrard.
The Rangers legend stated that the decision for Gerrard to leave for Villa will be down to the former midfielder himself.
During these past few days, rumours have been rife about Gerrard possibly taking the vacant role at Villa Park.
The Midlands side sacked Dean Smith on Sunday, as they are sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League table, after a run of five defeats on the bounce.
Boyd did admit that if Gerrard wanted to leave for Villa then ‘there isn’t much’ the Scottish Premiership champions can do about it.
“The decision will be down to Steven Gerrard, whether he feels that is the right move for him and his career,” said Boyd. “I don’t think Steven’s been motivated by finances. But a lot of managers are when they move from club to club.
“But Steven’s playing career, I think he will have plenty in the bank, that’s for sure, so he will decide if it’s the right move for his career.
“It’s my understanding that Aston Villa haven’t spoken to Rangers, at this moment in time. Even if they do, they are going to have to come with a large chunk of money because, at the end of the day, Rangers have now got themselves back where they can negotiate with people.
“For me, I don’t think Rangers are in any great hurry to replace Steven Gerrard with the job that he has done – if he thinks it’s the right move for his career, then there isn’t much they can do.”

If Villa appoint Gerrard as Smith’s replacement, then a lot of it will possibly be down to the club’s chief executive, Christian Purslow.
He was in the Liverpool boardroom when Gerrard was rifling in goals from midfield, so it’s understandable that he would lean towards him.
But are they going to be other names that Villa look out for other than Gerrard?
It would be a foolish move from Villa if they didn’t because there are far more experienced and proven managers out there.
