The popular American family drama, Shameless, has closed its doors for now but fans are not ready to say goodbye to The Gallaghers. The dysfunctional family’s fanbase is also wondering if the show is based on a real family.

After being on the air for ten years after airing 11 seasons, Shameless came to an end in April of this year. The show ran for two more seasons after the narrative’s lead and head of The Gallagher family, Fiona (Emmy Rossum), left in season 9.

Is Shameless based on a real family?

No, The Gallaghers were not inspired by any real-life family.

However, the American series is a direct adaptation of the original British series of the same name.

Created and written by Paul Abbott, Shameless ran on the UK’s Channel 4 for 11 seasons, between 2004 and 2013.

The show also features The Gallaghers and most of the characters have the same names as the American adaptation.

The pilot episode of both the British and American versions are nearly identical, and then the American show found its own narrative.

The finale begins with Frank’s overdose, brought about during the last episode, and he is later taken into hospital where it was revealed that he had Covid-19.

While suffering from Covid symptoms, Franks starts to hallucinate and believes that his nurse is Fiona – Frank’s eldest daughter who left in season 9.

As Frank is dying, he daydreams about being back at the Alibi with his family and he begins to levitate.

After his death, The Gallaghers read a touching letter from Frank before they attend his funeral. In the final moments of the finale, Frank’s body explodes during his cremation because of the amount of alcohol in his body.
