Ian Wright has claimed that Giovani Lo Celso ‘needs to do a lot more’ for Tottenham and Antonio Conte, as he told Premier League Productions (07/11/21 at 7:25 pm).

The former Premier League striker suggested that Lo Celso will now need to step up his game with Antonio Conte now in the Tottenham dugout.

Lo Celso came off the bench for Spurs over the weekend, as his side recorded a goalless draw in Conte’s first Premier League game in charge of the club.

Ever since Lo Celso moved to North London for £27 million (BBC Sport) – he was first on loan – the midfielder hasn’t been able to cement a regular place or showcase why the club paid so much money for him.

This is the fourth manager he will work under and Wright made it clear that he needs to deliver the goods.

“Lo Celso is somebody that needs to do a lot more for Spurs,” said Wright. “He nearly did it coming off the bench (v Everton).

“But they are going to need a lot more from him. Maybe, he is one of those people that is going to need to do a lot more under Antonio Conte.”

Tottenham need that progressive passer in the middle of the park, someone who can pick up those pockets, stop Harry Kane from dropping deep and knit the play together in the final third.

Christian Eriksen used to be that brilliant one or two-touch and quick-thinking footballer for Spurs, but Lo Celso hasn’t been able to deliver that since his arrival.

Injuries have played their part, but with only one goal and three assists in the Premier League, many probably expected more from Lo Celso.

But this is another chance for the midfielder to get into the good books of Conte and take his game to serious heights.
