Bobby Zamora has shared that he spoke with John Terry before Dean Smith was sacked by Aston Villa and how he was unsure about his future, as he told Stadium Astro.

The former Premier League striker, who is close friends with Terry, stated that the former centre-back would be interested in the now vacant Villa manager’s job.

Villa sacked their manager of three years on Sunday afternoon, after five Premier League defeats on the bounce this season and 18 in total during 2021.

It was a ruthless call by those in the Villa Park boardroom and one that has divided opinion far and wide.

Names are now starting to be thrown about, as Zamora was asked about whether Terry would want to take to the hot seat.

“I spoke to him last week and he mentioned Dean being under a lot of pressure,” said Zamora. “I said ‘they wouldn’t sack him, would they?’ He then said ‘Ooof, I really don’t know’.

“But would he be interested in Villa? Yes. I think he would. It would be an interesting one.”

It would be a shock if Villa handed Terry the keys to the dugout because he has zero experience of standing out on that touchline.

He has been a number two or part of a coaching set-up, like he was at Villa for several years, but never the main man.

Perhaps one day, Terry, like his old Chelsea teammate Frank Lampard, will land a gig at a Premier League club.

But Terry needs to get a taste of coaching life elsewhere before he can step into the deep end.
