Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are expected to win the race for Torino defender Gleison Bremer despite interest from Serie A leaders Napoli and Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, as reported by Torino Granata.

The 24-year-old centre-back may not be a household name on the red side of Stanley Park but neither was Joel Matip, Roberto Firmino or arguably Mo Salah following his brief spell at Chelsea.

And hands up who thought Andy Robertson and Gini Wijnaldum would blossom into two of Europe’s best when they arrived at Anfield from relegated Hull City and Newcastle United respectively?

When it comes to recruitment, it’s probably best to give Michael Edwards and co the benefit of the doubt.

Bremer is unlikely to be the first name on anyone’s lips when asked to name the finest centre-half in Serie A.

But those with their ear to the ground and a BT Sport subscription in their back pocket will tell you the former Atletico Mineiro man has been one of the most reliable defenders in the division for two years, even keeping Romelu Lukaku quiet during Inter’s procession to the Serie A title.

If it wasn’t for Bremer – and star striker Andrea Belotti, of course – Torino probably wouldn’t have stayed up last season, clinging on to their top-flight status like Frodo dangling one-handed over the fires of Mount Doom.

Will Gleison Bremer join Liverpool rather than Tottenham?

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked of late, with Tuttosport claiming former Inter Milan and Juventus boss Antonio Conte has identified Bremer as capable of slotting into his preferred back-three system with minimal fuss.

Bremer has made the most interceptions in Serie A this season – and by some considerable distance (WhoScored).

Torino Granata, meanwhile, believes Scudetto-chasing Napoli are readying a big-money offer of their own with Adam Ounas or Andrea Petagna potential makeweights in a player-plus-cash swap deal.

As it stands, however, Liverpool appear to have taken pole position in the race for his signature.

The question remains, however, that with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez, Nat Phillips and Matip all at Klopp’s disposal who – if anyone – would be sacrificed to make room for Bremer?
