Max Verstappen is locked into a titanic battle with Lewis Hamilton for the 2021 F1 world championship, but who is his girlfriend Kelly? What relationship does she have to a Formula One legend?

Verstappen has been in F1 since his debut in 2015, and driving for Red Bull since mid-2016 after a mid-season driver swap.

From 2016-2020, he was only able to take the occasional race win as Hamilton and Mercedes steam-rolled the opposition.

However, in 2021, Red Bull has been more competitive, allowing Verstappen a first shot at the world title.

He currently leads Hamilton by 12 points with five rounds remaining in the season.

Kelly’s elder brother is Nelson Piquet Jr.

An ex-F1 driver himself, Piquet Jr’s career ended in disgrace after he was found to have deliberately crashed in a race.

In Singapore 2008, his Renault team ordered him to crash and bring out a safety car to assist teammate Fernando Alonso.

It only came to light when Piquet Jr lost his seat in mid-2009.

After F1, he raced in Formula E, winning the first title in 2014-15.
