Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is high on Aston Villa’s wish list as they look to find a replacement for Dean Smith following his departure today.

That’s according to The Telegraph, who claim that Villa have a few names in mind to replace Smith.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl is one of them, but another is Rangers boss Gerrard.

Smith was sacked after the 1-0 defeat to Southampton on Friday night, Villa’s fifth loss in a row.

Villa will want a quick turnaround, and Gerrard is unsurprisingly on their wish list.

Gerrard has won 125 of his 193 games in charge of Rangers, boasting a win rate of almost 65%.

The 41-year-old has impressed since taking the Rangers job in 2018 and has already won a league title.

Gerrard is being backed for a huge future in management, and Villa now want to lure him away from Ibrox.

Would Gerrard risk leaving Rangers for Villa?

The big conversation around Gerrard is that he will likely end up becoming Liverpool manager one day.

More titles with Rangers would likely help that cause, but he would have to pick an intermediate move very carefully.

Villa have plenty of cash, a talented squad and a great fanbase. There is real potential there, and Gerrard would make himself impossible for Liverpool to ignore if he impresses there.

You do though have to look at how many managers have been turfed out of Villa in recent memory – Tim Sherwood, Remi Garde, Roberto Di Matteo, Steve Bruce, now Smith.

Gerrard does have a good thing going with Rangers, and Villa would surely have to make a huge offer for him to consider the move.
